The Season (Trout and Salmon):
The Regular West Coast Fishing Trout & Salmon Season runs from October to the end of April.
A winter season from May to September is open in some the lakes and lower reaches of the Rivers is available.
October - November most rivers carry variable amounts of water at this time due to rain & snow melt. There is nymph fishing of exceptional quality at this time. The weather can be cooler in the earlier part of the season.
Late November December is also time for the large Sea-Run Browns to make an appearance. The weather now starts to become more stable. Fish are beginning to rise to dries. An exceptional time to fish in New Zealand.
January - February Accuracy of casting and delicate presentation. Results in excellent catches March - April.
The sun is moving lower in the sky making spotting fish a little harder. Salmon are in the major rivers and some lakes during this period.
