The region surrounding Kawhaka Lodge is steeped in Maori history. The nearby Arahura River is held sacred by local Maori and has long been one of the primary sources of Pounamu (Jade). Pounamu has always been highly sought after by all tribes in New Zealand for weapons, tools and jewellery.
Being the hardest of all stones within the nation of Aotearoa (the land of the long white cloud) it was difficult to carve and heavy to carry. It was traded by local Maori and made it's way throughout the North and South Islands. Carried over the high mountain passes of the Southern Alps by strong men and women. Nowadays there is an entire industry built around the stone, primarily used for artistic carving and jewellery it is now highly sought after by people of all nations.
There are many stories to tell about the history and culture of the New Zealand Moari and the ties they have with the landscape.
At Kawhaka Lodge we are very fortunate to have the opportunity to immerse our guests into these stories of Maori culture through the knowledge and skills of local Maori guides. They will walk you in the footsteps of their forefathers, describe to you in detail the history of their people and their pounamu (jade). They will talk of the coming of the European and the effect it had on the natural landscape as well as the local tribes, and the life that is lived here today. You will also have the opportunity to try traditional Maori cuisine during your cultural tour and feel the touch of Pounamu (Jade) in your hands.
