"New Zealand is known as the seabird capital of the world and is also home to a number of forest birds that live nowhere else on Earth" Nz Department of Conservation (DOC)
Kawhaka Lodge has been built strategically within native rainforest surrounds. The birdlife is abundant throughout the year and birdsong is constant around the lodge. Mornings are a very special time, you can lie in bed at dawn listening to the wilderness waking up with song, or wander through the dawn chorus to see them in action.
Many of New Zealands prime species can be viewed on an almost daily basis. We are also fortunate to have quite a few very rare New Zealand native birds at certain times of the year.
You can regularly see and hear Tui's, Bellbirds, Fantail, Weka, Pukeko, Kahu, Karearea, Torea (winter), herons, fernbirds, robins and tom tits around the property.
